Okay, here's why the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture & Young Activist Award is close to my heart:

  1. I work for Tides (which facilitates this prize).
  2. I share Mario's alma mater (check him out here, listed right below Cleve Jones, founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which was fiscally sponsored by Tides when I arrived here in 2007).
  3. I'm on the board of Third Wave Foundation (a feminist, activist foundation that grants to organizations powered by young women and transgender youth, ages 15 to 30) because I believe that investing in youth leadership accelerates social change.
  4. Craziest of all? I believe that YouTube is sparking a renaissance in public oratory.

So, in tribute to Mario and to kick off nominations this year, I share these inspiring clips featuring young public orators. I clearly have biases, so if you have a video you would rather see on this list, please comment below to share it with me. If I get 10+ video suggestions, I'll include them in a sequel to this post. Let the jams begin.

Peace, --dom.
