Ellen - thanks for the fantastic post! What excites me about Tides is how you've been working with a network mindset both inside the organization and externally in your support for networks.

I believe the networking of the future will be guided by unity of vision rather than unity of action. If we can unite around the vision of the sustainable world we are working toward, we can cooperate readily, even as we work on vastly different problems and in very different ways. I've written more about this at http://opw.dreamhosters.com/wordpress/?p=5. I'd be interested in hearing from other like-minded visioneers.

There are facets to social networking that bring to mind harsh edges of reality: some are ok, like the cost is negligible except for time. One significant one is the abiding digital divide that also includes folks who don't use the computer for much. Because there is such capacity involved with the internet, the folks who don't use it are increasingly iced out. From input into government agendas, from information as basic as loans, grants and jobs. The digital divide is not just from deprivation of income but also is directly related to age. Plenty of people who communicate daily by email, who utilize and read sophisticated materials on the internet, are not involved, or are interested in, because they don't understand, social networking.
Using Facebook has been a way for us to achieve many goals. Ironically, we would like to explore this with others of like minds, but have no where to do that!
Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to pen a few points here.
